What is a water ionizer and how does it work?
That $4 bottle of alkaline water? It usually starts as ordinary tap water. A water ionizer does the same thing at home: it filters your water, then uses electrolysis to turn it into mineral-rich alkaline water on demand. We break down exactly what happens inside the machine — step by step, hype-free.
What are the benefits
of alkaline water?
Some say alkaline water cures everything. Others call it pure hype. The truth? Somewhere in between. We looked at what the research actually says — from minerals and molecular hydrogen to what alkaline water definitely won't do for you.
A water ionizer is an appliance that filters your tap water and then splits it into an alkaline (basic) and an acidic stream through electrolysis, using platinum-coated titanium plates. The alkaline stream has a higher pH and contains dissolved molecular hydrogen (H2), which is considered an antioxidant.
Generally, yes — including for children and pets. If you take medication, it's often recommended to use the "purified water" setting (neutral pH), and to check with your doctor if you have any concerns.
ORP (Oxidation-Reduction Potential) measures, in millivolts, whether water behaves as an oxidizer or an antioxidant. Alkaline ionized water typically has a negative ORP, which indicates antioxidant properties.
Users commonly report better hydration, more energy, and a fresher taste, generally attributed to the antioxidant properties of hydrogen-rich water. These are user- and manufacturer-reported experiences, not medically approved claims.
It's best enjoyed fresh. The antioxidant effect (hydrogen content) typically fades after about 24–48 hours, even though the water often stays alkaline longer. Store it in a tightly sealed container, filled as close to the top as possible, to slow this down.
